The Citizens Foundation (TCF), Pakistan

TCF is a professionally managed, not-for-profit organization established in 1995 in Pakistan. The organization was set up by a group of concerned citizens aiming at removing the barriers of class and privilege in education, to make the children of Pakistan its agents of positive change.

TCF provides quality education for children in poor and neglected urban slums (katchi abaadis) and villages, without any discrimination. The network of TCF schools employs qualified and especially trained teachers, implementing a modern, balanced curriculum and an efficient system of monitoring and evaluation of its teaching programs. As of 2008, TCF operates 600 school units (including afternoon shifts) serving 80,000 students.

Every TCF school is purpose-built, complete with all modern educational facilities such as playgrounds, libraries, and computer and science laboratories. To ensure that education is affordable for every student, a pay-as-you-can afford system is used, and educational aid up to 95 percent is awarded on the basis of need. Deserving students get uniforms and textbooks free of cost. Many TCF students attend school by paying as little as Rs. 10 (less than 10 cents) [change to less than 20 cents] per month. TCF also offers career counseling and financial scholarships for higher education to students graduating from its secondary schools. Learn more about TCF here.
