NewsAnnual Celebration in IndianaSaturday, October 8, 2011 was the 6th Annual Celebration by our Indiana Supporters, led by Azhar Khan, who is also a Director on the TCF-USA board. After the 2005 earthquake in the northern areas of Pakistan, the Indiana supporters built a school called the “Campus of Hope” in Mansehra, which they have supported continuously since it started operation. In the aftermath of the 2010 floods, this Group has also adopted a school in the flood impacted area of Moro, Sindh. In addition, the Support Group has helped a local Indiana city school. This year’s event set a new record for attendance. The gala comprised an auction and an excellent musical performance by sons of Ghazal Maestro Mehdi Hasan, Imran Hasan and Kamran Hasan.
Austin supports TCF-USAThe team of Farri Khan, Omer Dossani, Imran Baqai and Ashraf Tariq hosted a gathering comprising Zia Mohyeddin and 120 members of the Austin community in September 2011. The people of Austin were very generous in their support of the TCF mission. The TCF support group in Austin has been very active for a couple of years and TCF continues to enjoy the strong support of the alumni of University of Texas at Austin.
Fundraising Gala in St. LouisOur first ever TCF-USA Gala was held at the Frontenac Hilton on September 10, 2011. The event was attended by 350 people. Mr. Zia Mohyeddin presented his tribute to Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Dr. Ahson Rabbani, Vice President of The Citizens Foundation, gave a talk on the TCF mission and achievements. The audience was very receptive to the TCF message and the St. Louis team decided to donate the proceeds of the evening to fund an endowment for the operation of a TCF school.
TCF commits to action at CGI meetingThe annual meeting of CGI was held in New York in September 2011, where members announced their commitments for next year and reported progress made on previous commitments. TCF shared its model of education and discussed scaling up its programs. Co-founder Ahsan Saleem announced a commitment to add 10,000 out-of-school children to TCF schools in 2012 and added: "We will also fund 500 scholarships in higher education for girls who graduate from our system and provide literacy training to 4,000 mothers and older siblings of our children. This commitment will create 600 new jobs for women as all our faculty are female. Through CGI, we seek to partner with other organizations especially in teacher training and academic audits to scale up our work and ensure quality of delivery."
$1B UK aid for education
A new British aid package for Pakistan, announced by Prime Minister David Cameron in Islamabad, is worth $1,055 million over four years. The money will fund education for up to 4 million students, train 9,000 teachers, purchase 6 million new text books and build 8,000 schools by 2015, according to various media reports.
