When Shaheen was just 10 years old, her parents arranged her Nikkah (marriage) ceremony, which is not uncommon for young girls in Jhangesar, a small fishing village in Sindh.
Each time her school began a new academic year, Shaheen was told it would be her last. That would have been true if it wasn’t for her stubborn refusal to give up her right to learn
Due to her persistence, not only did Shaheen get her education at TCF, but she graduated and started teaching in the same school, helping other girls learn and stay in school, just like her.
Shaheen did not stop pursuing her dreams. She took a step further and enrolled in the BSc. Nursing program with an aim to provide access to healthcare to people in her village.

According to Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey (PDHS), 3.3% of girls are married off under the age of 15, while 18.3% of girls married off are under the age of 18.
Pakistan is, as noted by UNICEF, the country with the world’s second highest number of out of school children . With an estimated 22.8 million children aged 5-16 not attending school, representing 44 per cent of the total population in this age group.
